If your not sure whether to rinse or scrub your food read on…
With the recent killer E.coli outbreak striking fear in the hearts of every vegie-eating European I wouldn’t blame you for being a tad bit more worried about how to clean your fruit and vegies.
Here are some solutions so you don’t swear of your fresh yummy vegies forever:
Edible skin such as apples, peaches, tomatoes, zuchini, capsicum:
Scrub under water for 30 to 60 seconds. Running water helps remove most of the bacteria. Scrubbing with a vegetable brush or your fingers will elminate stubborn hanger ons
That grows in a bunch such as berries and grape:
Remove stalks and stems where dirt can hide, dump the fruit into a colander and hose down with the tap for at least 60 seconds. Patting the fruit dry with paper towels will further cut down the bacteria
What you peel such as melon, oranges and bananas:
Use a vegies brush or unused toothbrush on the peel for 30-60 seconds. The bristles can reach into crevices on textured skin where dirt hides. Why bother washing it if your not biting into it? Microbes from the fruit’s skin can spread to the flesh when you touch it with your hands or a knife
Thats leafy such as spinach, lettuce, bok choy:
Discard the outer leaves and run the rest under cold water for 30-60 seconds. Dry with a salad spinner or blot with paper towels
