30 Nov The Afterburn Effect
Put simply the after burn effect is the calories that your body will burn after a workout or boot camp for the next 48 hours. So even after you finish your workout, you will continue to burn calories. Sound good?! I think so. However bare in mind that there are only certain exercises that will result in the after burn effect.
For example, a long slow walk or jog is going to be really good for you in terms of promoting a cardiovascular workout and burning calories as well as those lovely feel good hormones. However after you finish the walk/jog your heart rate goes back down and you will only continue to burn a small amount of calories. However if you include strength training and intervals and push yourself super hard, you are not only burning calories in that workout, but burning calories for the next 48 hours at a much more accelerated rate.
Example: A trainer friend I know put this to the test and wore a calorie burner and heart rate watch and worked out for 30 mins at a very intense rate. She then sat down and made a phone call for about 20 minutes, looked down and saw she had continued to burn a further 300 calories. That’s massive!
This is why I decided to start a strength and weights session on Monday and combine in with the interval training and boxing sessions to really deliver you a much higher after burn effect so you can continue to reach your goals.
Of course remember that nutrition is very important after this and it doesn’t mean you can go out and eat anything you want! But you can definitely include a little something indulgent every now and then…you deserve it!
