A change is a good as a holiday?

What does this saying mean? Is change really as good as a holiday? Well I think it can definitely depend on how you define a holiday! Is it camping or going overseas to Hawaii for 2 weeks? But in all seriousness, if I use a recent change I have made to myself then I can definitely agree with the above.

You see last week I made the snap/impulsive decision to go from a very blond girl to a chocolate brown brunette. Some of my friends were like ‘wow, your brave’, but as I told them bravery didn’t even get a show in. I actually yearned for this change. I shan’t bore you with the finer details but I will let you know I am currently working through a challenging period in my life which has led me to a great deal of changes. These changes have included a change of though pattern, learning more about living in the present, developing patience, and relinquishing control of aspects of my life (this was certainly one of the hardest!). And of course this brings me back to the change I am focusing on which is my hair colour.

You see out of all the above, my hair colour is the only external or superficial change that I have made and therefore many would attest that this is only a fleeing short lived change that won’t ‘solve’ the problem, that I need to look inside myself and blah blah. Yes this is of course true but I would also like to argue that making external changes is actually good for the brain chemistry and can certainly contribute to happiness.

Research has now shown that making changes to even really small things can have a significant impact on your life and way you think. You see the brain is every growing, ever developing and is constantly wanting to gain more knowledge. However for it to keep on developing it requires stimulation to its neural pathways. One area that has begun to be explored more is the idea of the brains need for novelty. Novelty can be defined as: A new or unfamiliar thing or experience so therefore it could be just about anything! It could be driving a different way to work, having toast instead of porridge, trying a new restaurant, working out in the morning instead of evening or changing boyfriends (hehehe).

So next time you feel like you are stuck in a rut, make a decision to change something and see how you go. You might even find it begins a positive spiral and your life makes a big turn around. 🙂
